entropy I

for solo alto saxophone

entropy I "Difficulty" brings to mind the outcry of persecuted Christians across the world, referencing Psalm 73. I matched the two contrasting ideas in the psalm to two different pitch sets, showing progression through their transformation and exploration of different timbral and stylistic combinations.

In this piece, I explore a wide spectrum of styles, from "rude jazz licks" to exquisite lyricism. Being the first of my non-piano solo works, I experimented with extended techniques like slaps and multiphonics to expand sonic diversity.

I drew inspiration from Luciano Berio's Sequenzas in their formal innovations, as well as the approach to time in Nicolaus Huber's "Aus Schmerz und Trauer".
